Light Motor Vehicle
A light motor vehicle must be equipped with pneumatic tyres (tyres filled with air) that meet the following conditions: it must have a tread of at least 1 millimetre in depth.
1. Visible Tread Pattern
• The tyre surface must display, throughout its entire breadth (from one sidewall to the other) and around the full circumference of the tyre,
• a clearly visible tread pattern.
• This pattern provides the necessary grip to maintain traction on the road surface, especially in wet or slippery conditions.
2. Minimum Tread Depth
• The tread depth must be at least 1 millimetre across the whole tyre.
• A tread depth below this limit is unsafe as it reduces road grip and increases the risk of skidding or aquaplaning.
3. Purpose of the Regulation
• To ensure proper road holding, braking performance, and vehicle control.
• To reduce the risk of tyre failure, accidents, and loss of control, particularly in adverse weather conditions.
Motorcycle - Tyre Regulations
You may not ride a motorcycle on a public road if it does not meet the following tyre and engine-related requirements:
1. Motorcycles with an engine capacity exceeding 50 cc
• Display, throughout its entire breadth (from side to side) and around the full circumference,
• A clearly visible tread pattern,
• Riding a motorcycle with an engine larger than 50 cc that does not meet these tyre requirements is illegal.
2. Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 50 cc or less
• The tread on each tyre must have a visible tread pattern over at least 80% of the full width of the tyre at every position around the tread.
• If the tread pattern covers less than 80% of the tyre width, the motorcycle is not roadworthy and may not be used on a public road.
3. Prohibition on Retreaded Tyres
• No motorcycle, regardless of engine size, may be equipped with a retreaded tyre (a tyre that has had a new tread applied to an old casing).
• Retreaded tyres are more prone to failure and pose a serious safety hazard.
